Common merganser (普通沙秋鴨）

Hi Thomas and Grace,

There was another surprise in our regular outing to the wilderness(野外）last week. It was a gloomy rainy day in Riley Park at Lock #24 of C&O Canal off River Road, Potomac, Maryland. We spotted this family of common merganser in the creek when we were about to park our car. Just share a photo or two with you. Are they gorgeous? Notice that few chicks ride on mom’s back while the rest following right behind. Cute, sweet and spectacular , isn’t it? It’s said that like other migratory waterfowl, they come south in the Winter and fly back north in the Spring; and it’s rare and unusual to stay down to have a family here.

春雷一過轉北方

Mother Bald Eagle feeding Eaglet (禿頭鷹母子）

Hi Thomas and Grace,

It’s ecstatic (欣喜若狂) to see this mother eagle feeding her baby patiently and intimately high up in the nest on a huge pine tree at Blackwater Wildlife Refugee 10 miles from Cambridge, Maryland. While mom is feeding young, the father eagle standing nearby and watching /guarding the nest from any intruder. It’s told that it will take at least a month or so for this eaglet to leave the nest and be independent.

北美大鵰鴞 （Great horned owl)

Hi Thomas and Grace,

Do you ever see Great Horned Owl in the wild? It’s said that this kind of owl is most popular and widely spread in North America. I personally never saw it once in the woods in my entire life. We accidentally saw a mother owl with at least 2 owlets in the bottom of cavity of a huge dead tree trunk. In one of photos, see if you can spot her and a fluffy white stuff which belongs to the resting owlets in front of her. During our 2 to 3 hours of stay and watching, the mother was sleeping while the babies stood up and played several times. They are cute and adorable, aren’t they? There was a third owlet, pushed aside by the siblings and not in the photos.
